At the last minute we decided to drive up to Vancouver this weekend and take in the whole Olympic experience. We tried over a year and a half ago to get tickets through the random raffle but didn't have any luck and just figured we would catch everything on TV. After last week we decided we were way too close to miss this once in a lifetime opportunity and made plans with Blane's aunt Patty and uncle Nick to stay at their house in Bellingham and drive up for the day on Saturday. We got an early start crossing the boarder around 7:30AM and were downtown Vancouver at the official Olympic store at 8:30AM. We bought a day pass for the subway and between that and walking our feet raw we criss crossed all around downtown and greater Vancouver to all the different sights and soaked it all in. We tried to get tickets to see the final long track speed skating event but decided $400/ea for tickets was a little too much and caught the game at a nearby bar instead. We watched the gold medal curling match at the German House (a small version of Oktoberfest), ran into the gold medal short track speed skating team from Canada (they showed off their gold medals for us), caught a concert in Richland, picked up tons of swag at the gear store and got lots of pictures of the Olympic torch. The boarders were a breeze, no lines, and we rolled back into Bellingham around 11:30pm last night. It was a great day.
